Getting started
What is dirtClaude?
dirtClaude is a prospecting and rockhounding map. It puts BLM mining claims, land ownership, USGS mine records, geology, LiDAR terrain and water on one map. It also includes Auggie, an AI geologist you can ask about the ground you're looking at.
Is it free?
Yes. The free Rockhound plan never expires and includes:
- surface ownership and tribal lands;
- topo-sheet mine features, and mine dumps and tailings;
- creeks, washes and thermal springs;
- a double-click readout of what's underground;
- 3D terrain, GPS tracks, and waypoints with photos.
Pro adds claims, the PLSS grid, MRDS mine records, predictions, geology, LiDAR, the Subsurface tab and My Layers. The pricing table lists every feature by plan.
Do I need an account?
Yes, a free one: an email address and a password. Your account carries your plan between the website and the Android app.
Is there a phone app?
Yes, on Android: search for dirtClaude on Google Play. On an iPhone or iPad, open dirtclaude.ai in Safari and choose Share → Add to Home Screen to get the same map with its own icon. One account and one subscription work everywhere.
Plans & billing
What do the paid plans cost?
- Weekender Pro: $1.99 for 3 days, with no renewal.
- Pro Monthly: $9.99 a month.
- Pro Yearly: $99 a year, about two months free compared with paying monthly.
All three unlock every Pro feature. Auggie comes only with Pro Monthly and Pro Yearly.
What is Weekender Pro?
A one-time $1.99 pass for a trip. It gives you every Pro feature except Auggie for 72 hours from when your payment is confirmed. It is not a subscription and never renews. Buying another pass adds 72 hours to the time you have left.
Do I get my $1.99 back if I upgrade?
Yes, once. Upgrade while your pass is running, or within 7 days after it ends, and your first month of Pro Monthly or first year of Pro Yearly costs $1.99 less. On the web the credit applies automatically at checkout. In the Android app it applies where Google Play offers it. Each account can use it once.
How do I cancel?
On the web: open the map and tap your Pro badge, the small dirtClaude mark at the top of the screen. It opens the billing portal, where you can cancel.
On Android: open Google Play, go to Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions, then choose dirtClaude.
Either way, Pro keeps working until the end of the period you've paid for.
Do you give refunds?
Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time. Except where the law requires it, partial periods aren't refunded. The full terms are in the Terms of Service. If something went wrong with a charge, email support@dirtclaude.ai and we'll sort it out.
Does a subscription bought in the Android app work on the website?
Yes. Pro belongs to your account, not the device. Sign in with the same email on dirtclaude.ai or in the app, and Pro is there.
The data
Where does the claims data come from, and how current is it?
Claims come from the BLM's Mineral & Land Records System (MLRS). We refresh them on a regular schedule, daily to weekly. BLM's own records can lag recent filings, so a claim staked last week may not show yet.
Is the map enough to stake a claim or prove ground is open?
No. Although our claims info comes directly from the BLM, we can't legally say it's enough to stake a claim on. You're going to need to get your fat ass out and walk the property. Look for claim stakes, and for God's sake... don't pull existing stakes out and put your own in! That's claim jumping!
Before you file, check the claim's status in BLM MLRS and with the county recorder, and read the Terms of Service.
Can I prospect or collect on an active claim?
Not without the claim holder's permission, because they hold the mineral rights. Land status matters as well. BLM, National Forest, State Trust, tribal and private land each have their own rules, and a dot on our map is never permission to enter or collect.
What are the prediction scores?
The heat map and scored targets come from statistical models (Weights of Evidence and Random Forest). The models compare the geology around known deposits with the ground around a point. Double-click anywhere for a 1–99 score and the factors behind it. The scores are probabilities and can be wrong. Use them to decide where to look, not what you'll find.
Where do the other layers come from?
Public sources, including:
- USGS, BLM, the Forest Service and NRCS;
- the state geological surveys;
- the state water agencies;
- the state oil and gas and minerals agencies, and NASA.
Each source updates on its own schedule, and some lag what's on the ground.
In the field
Does it work without cell signal?
Yes. GPS tracking and waypoints work with no signal and sync when you're back online. Before you go, save an Offline Field Pack of the area you're heading to. On the free plan it holds the free layers, and on Pro it holds every layer. Areas you've already viewed are also kept on your device.
Can I bring in my own data?
Yes, with Pro. My Layers imports these formats:
- KML and KMZ, including Google Earth image overlays;
- GPX and GeoJSON;
- Esri shapefiles, either zipped or as a
.shpwith its.dbfand.prj.
You can also draw your own points, lines and areas, and export everything to KMZ, KML, GeoJSON or GPX. Your layers stay on your device and are not uploaded to us.
Can I export my GPS track?
Yes, on every plan. Tracks and waypoints export to GPX or GeoJSON for other GPS apps and mapping software.
Is it safe to go into old mines?
No. Abandoned mines are deadly. They have open shafts, bad air and rotten timbers, and they can collapse. Stay out, stay alive. Desert washes also flash-flood, and the creek and wash flags on the map are estimates, not gauges.
Auggie
What is Auggie?
Auggie is dirtClaude's AI geologist, built on Anthropic's Claude. Ask about the spot on the map you're looking at, for example what the rocks are, which mines are nearby, or what was produced there. Auggie answers from USGS and state geological survey reports, together with the map's own layers.
How many questions can I ask?
Pro Monthly includes 3 questions a day and Pro Yearly includes 5. The count resets at midnight UTC. Weekender Pro and the free plan don't include Auggie.
Privacy & your account
Do you sell my data?
No, never. We don't run ads or ad trackers. The Privacy Policy lists everything we collect and why.
Do you track my location?
Only while the map or a recording is open, and a GPS recording starts only when you press Start. The Android app has no background-location permission.
How do I delete my account?
Email support@dirtclaude.ai from the address you signed up with. We'll confirm within 30 days. To delete only your saved GPS data and keep the account, see Retention & deletion.
I forgot my password.
